Dr. Amilcar Perez

Postdoctoral Fellow

Amilcar Perez is interested in elucidating the underlying mechanisms of bacterial cell wall synthesis, and the coordination between cytoskeletal elements, enzyme activities, and metabolic inputs that guide this intricate problem.

Prior to being at Johns Hopkins Amilcar did a post doc in fission yeasts with Fred Chang studying polarized tip growth. He obtained his PhD in Malcolm Winkler’s lab at  Indiana University where he studied cell division in S. pneumoniae. As an undergraduate Amilcar studied bacterial communication in Beth Lazazzera’s lab at UCLA.

Additionally, Amilcar is  co-chair of the Johns Hopkins Diversity Post Doctoral Alliance Committee at Johns Hopkins University where he is able to give back to his community as a proud Guatemalan-American Scientist.

If not in lab you can find Amilcar exercising at the gym or exploring charming places in Baltimore while carrying his Chihuahua.
